A group of professionals, under the auspices of the Nigerian Academy of International Affairs, has accused Nigerian politicians of traveling to London, Paris and other foreign countries to hold meetings.

The group described politicians’ journey abroad “in search of delusional solutions to Nigeria’s problems” as “unfortunate and heartbreaking”.

This was stated in a statement entitled “The London Show of Shame,” signed by the group’s chairman, Professor A. Bolaji Akinyemi, on behalf of 17 other intellectuals.

The statement of August 28, 2022, made available to our correspondent on Tuesday, read in part: “The Academy is shocked by the clownish gathering of some members of our political elite in London recently followed after similar meetings in Paris and Dubai.

“It is very unfortunate and heartbreaking that some Nigerian leaders have had to leave the shores of this country for the ex-colonial capitals of London and Paris in search of delusional solutions to Nigeria’s problems.

“The unwise and ignorant jamboree of shame exhibited by these prominent Nigerian politicians in London/Paris has shown once again that the Nigerian environment they have created and polluted is not conducive to their vain conceit and undeserved esteem.

“Therefore, and because of their neo-colonial mentality that blinded them to see and appreciate the goodwill and resilience of Nigerians, they preferred a hearty western atmosphere.

“The implication of this is Nigeria’s exposure, directly or indirectly, to unwarranted Western influences, especially as they were washing our dirty linen in the world’s full luster.”

The PUNCH reported that a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, had met with Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; and other top politicians in London last Thursday.

On the same day, the People’s Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also stormed London with his deputies to meet with Wike to resolve the crisis plaguing the party.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, had traveled to France on June 27, 2022 to hold “important rallies”.

In the statement, the group of intellectuals explained that the “unnecessary and unforgivable” trips to London and France showed that the leaders were insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

The statement added: “Indeed, the unnecessary and unforgivable trips to London/Paris/Dubai showed the insensitivity and reckless disregard for the plight of Nigerian workers and retirees whose salaries and pensions have been unpaid for a long time.

“It is really disgusting and unacceptable that Nigerian leaders are always flying out of the country in search of the magic wand to solve the country’s problems.

“It would be more cost effective and appropriate to brainstorm here in Nigeria to get wise advice from the wealthy pool of highly capable and patriotic Nigerians.

“The solution to Nigeria’s problems lies in Nigeria and among Nigerians.”
