The acting chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Haruna Abdullahi, has urged taxpayers to refrain from employing tax advisers to audit tax records and conceal documents.

Abdullahi made the call when he appeared on the News Agency of Nigeria flagship program in Abuja.

He warned that any taxpayer who conspired with such tax advisers would suffer the consequences.

According to him, any taxpayer who buys misleading information when filing tax returns will face the wrath of the law.

However, he said that advisors and tax advisers have been instrumental in providing guidance and advice on tax matters, but some have fallen short of expectations.

“The agency recognizes that some of these things happen because it’s human nature.

“So we are hiring professional bodies like the Chartered Institute of Taxation and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria regarding unethical practices.

“We engage them because it is mainly advisers who are members of these associations.

“However, the tax issues are a personal responsibility of the individual.

“If you allow someone to mislead you as a taxpayer while you have opportunities to teach yourself what to do, you are the one the taxman will follow,” he said.

Abdullahi said the agency had mechanisms in place to detect such unhealthy practices, adding that there was no hiding place for questionable individuals.

The FCT-IRS chief said that in most cases the agency was armed with additional information to show that a taxpayer withheld some details.

While advising taxpayers to be properly guided in filing tax returns and other tax matters, Abdullahi warned that ignorance of the law was no excuse.

NAN reports that the FCT-IRS was established by the FCT Internal Revenue Service Act of 2015.

It is authorized to collect taxes that may be collected by a state government in accordance with the Taxes and Duties Act (Approved Collection List) of 1998, as amended.
