A 90-year-old ex-soldier, Usman Adamu, who allegedly supplied illegal drugs to bandits, has been arrested by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency officials.

NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, said Adamu was arrested on Wednesday, August 3, in Mailalle, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of ​​Sokoto State.

He found that the suspect had been caught with 5.1 kilograms of cannabis sativa.

“A female passenger, Lydia Lami, was arrested at Lagos airport on Sunday, July 31, for attempting to export 1,700 tablets of tramadol 225 mg, hidden in her luggage, to Istanbul, Turkey, via a Turkish Airlines flight.

“Preliminary investigation by the NDLEA revealed that the suspect, a mother of three, is from Zango Kataf LGA in Kaduna State, and lives with her family in Istanbul, Turkey.

“Lydia blames her action on pressure to raise N5m ransom to free her mother from captivity by bandits, who have kidnapped her since June this year,” the statement added.

Babafemi also said a suspected cross-border drug dealer, Reverend Anietie Effiong, was arrested by anti-narcotics bureau agents with three barrels of crystal methamphetamine, also known as Mkpuru Mmiri, believed to be imported from India.

The illegal drug found in the shipment weighing 90kg was reportedly loaded onto a commercial bus in Ojuelegba, Lagos, and was intercepted during a stop and search along the Umuahia-Ikot-Ekpene highway on Saturday, August 6. 2022.

An investigation by the NDLEA revealed that the drug, packaged in a 30kg barrel, was intended for Effiong, who was arrested during a follow-up operation on Oron Beach in Oron.

The recovered meth drums were reportedly intended for onward delivery to the Republic of Cameroon.

“At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, a 37-year-old resident of Ovia LGA, Edo State, living in Italy, Solo Osamede, was arrested for ingesting 41 packs of heroin. He was arrested and taken into custody for eviction while trying to board a Turkish airline flight to Milan, Italy, via Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday, July 30.

“The swallowed wrappers of the illegal drug were recovered in four discharges, which the suspect completed on Monday, Aug. 1, the statement added.
