Ebonyi women, under the auspices of the Federated Ebonyi Women Organization, have claimed their August meeting was disrupted by the state’s Ebubeagu security unit.
This was when the women petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman; and the International Federation of Women Lawyers and Rights Societies, adding that their right to freedom of association was trampled by the state government on Saturday.
Sunday PUNCH reports that the venue of the August meeting, Peoples Club, Abakaliki, the state capital, was allegedly raided by the Ebubeagu agents in their vehicles.
In a communiqué signed after their press conference by the President of Umuada Ebonyi, Ms Charity Chukwuemeka; Coordinator, EBOWATAN, Hon. Amaka Chukwu; Chairman of Ebonyi Windows’ Forum; among other things, in Abakaliki, on Saturday, the women claimed that the Ebonyi government was displaying actions that were harmful to them, in the state.
The communiqué read: “This press conference is to enlist the help of the press, IGP, FILDA and rights groups for the desecration of women’s rights in Ebonyi State by Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi using Ebubeagu Security Network . The Nigerian Constitution guarantees the freedom of women. Articles 15(2) and 42(1) a & b(2)(3) prohibit discrimination based on sex and ensure that men and women have equal access to justice in contracts, torts and civil matters.
“The hardworking, peace-promoting women of Ebonyi State under the auspices of the Federated Ebonyi Women Organization, were unjustly attacked, embarrassed, and evicted from the venue of their August 2022 annual meeting on this day, August 20, 2022, which was scheduled to be held on August 20, 2022. to keep. at the People’s Club Hall, Abakaliki.
“This heinous act was carried out by Ebonyi State Executive Governor Engr. Dave Umahi, through his attack dogs, Ebonyi State’s Ebubeagu Security outfit.
“It is not new or strange to the Igbo race that the entire women gather every August to discuss and map out the best possible development ideas and projects to improve the well-being and well-being of our people.
It added: “As a result of the unwarranted disruption of this year’s August meeting, which is scheduled for this day, August 20, 2022, our position is as follows:
“That these attacks are unreasonable and unwarranted violations of the constitutional rights of the women of Ebonyi State, which should not be tolerated.
“That as mothers we will speak to our sons and husbands in solidarity by standing with us in this protest against the dictatorship.
“That despite the hardships suffered by the women of Ebonyi State due to his unproductive leadership, he further attacked our women on this auspicious day, inflicting even more suffering on us.
“That he has violated the rights of the entire Ebonyi women and should be held accountable for it.
“That for unjustly attacking and humiliating our women in this sacrilegious manner, Ebonyi women hereby call on the Inspector General of Police and Civil Rights Groups to come to our aid by ensuring that Governor Umahi’s agents, used to commit these crimes are brought to justice while Umahi’s militia, known as Ebubeagu Security Network, is to be disbanded by the federal government.”
Ebonyi State Special Security Adviser Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha said Ebubeagu agents have received a security report that unknown gunmen will use the site to attack the state.
He said meetings in August are usually not held in the city, but in villages, and claimed those arrested will be prosecuted.
