Edo State Police Command said a suspected kidnapper, who engaged his staff in a firefight, was killed, while four kidnapped victims were rescued.

In a press release on Sunday by the Command’s deputy spokesperson, ASP Jennifer Iwegbu said information from a victim who escaped from the kidnappers’ lair led to the gunmen’s pursuit.

The statement read: “After credible information received at approximately 8:10 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2022, from a man who escaped from a kidnapper’s lair on Aug. 18, 2022, men of the state commando in conjunction with men of the vigilante group and fighters, ambushed Iyuku Forest, where the incident had taken place.

“At about 11:30 a.m., one of the suspected kidnappers, as they emerged from hiding with a single-barreled cannon in hand, ran into the ambush laid by men of the commando.

“Seeing the police, the suspect started firing at the security guards but was neutralized in the process, while the other members of the gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

“A locally made single-barrel cannon and four live rounds were recovered at the scene, while forest combing is underway to arrest the fleeing gang members.

“In a related development, the commando also rescued four kidnapped victims in the state following credible information available to the command on Aug. 20 that gangsters, suspected kidnappers, dressed in military uniforms, emerged from the bush around 9 p.m. along the Benin-Akure Road, a car with Reg no MM 528 AA intercepted and dragged its occupants into the bush.

“Men from the commando immediately mobilized on the scene to rigorously comb the bushes and rescue the victims and rescued four victims as the kidnappers ran away when they came under heavy fire. The four rescued victims are Okolie Chukuka, Samson Ayodele, Ronke Makinde and her five-year-old daughter,” the statement said.
