The management of Kwara State University, Malete has refuted the statement of the Chair of the Academic Staff Union of Universities Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who described the institution as fake.

KWASU in a rejoinder signed by Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, director, University Relations, said that in an interview broadcast on Arise Television, Professor Osodeke labeled Kwara State University, among some other state institutions in Nigeria, as “quacks” and “irrelevant” for the singular reason that these institutions did not strike.

The statement stated that KWASU, which was established about 13 years ago, has become one of the most important higher education institutions in Nigeria.

It read in part: “For the record, Kwara State University is an institution founded on the vision of pushing the boundaries of knowledge for the good of society.

“As the first public university in Nigeria, we have taken the lead in expanding the higher education curriculum by equipping our students with entrepreneurial skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Kwara State University is also the leading university that focuses on communities with the aim of solving the challenges they face while helping to develop these communities. We are currently the only university in Nigeria to go green in its thinking and activities as proactive measures to save the environment. All of this is reflected in our mantra of ‘the green university for community development and entrepreneurship’.

“Again, Kwara State University is the first institution in Nigeria to establish Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering as a progressive step to develop human capacity for the country’s aerospace needs.

“Many of our ideas are adopted by many other institutions that Professor Osodeke praised in his uncritical statements.

Kwara State University’s entrepreneurship education model is now a recommended addition to institutions in the country, just as we have contributed to the development of secondary schools’ curriculum to enable the uptake of entrepreneurship training at that level.

Kwara State University has all of its academic programs accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the required professional regulatory bodies.

“As an institution founded barely thirteen years ago, KWASU has made a name for itself as a university that focuses on breaking new ground, doing new things and advancing society through its students, activities and contributions to the industry and society as a whole.

“With outstanding academic staff, many of whom are nationally and internationally renowned, coupled with the quality of our graduates, many of whom are in practically every state of the country and even many countries of the world, the statements of the ASUU National President in which KWASU has been described as one of the universities that are “quacks” and irrelevant to the courtesy of universities in the country, indicates that he is limited in his understanding of what is going on around him: this is a sad commentary on the status of the person holding such a respected position.

“A retraction of this appalling statement and a published apology to Kwara State University immediately from Professor Emmanuel Osodeke are in order as the institution would not be silent in the face of defamatory allegations against its existence and contributions.”
