Three Suspected robbers terrorizing residents of Delta State’s Ughelli North and Ughelli South Local Government Area have been set ablaze by a mob in the area’s Ekiugbo community.
The robbery suspects, allegedly armed with advanced weapons, were charged with robbing residents of the Iwhrekan community in Ughelli South LGA after they overpowered combined teams of vigilantes from the Edjorphe and Iwhrekan communities, respectively.
city tour gathered that the suspected robbers who came to the metropolis of Ughelli in a tricycle, also known as “Keke” and a motorcycle, were detained and set on fire at about 5 am on Wednesday while robbing victims in Panama Layout in the Ekiugbo -community.
A source said the mobsters were responsible for the murder of a vigilante chief, identified as Sunday, in Iwhrenene a month ago.
Some of the victims who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity told of their ordeals.
One of them said: “In Iwhrekan, they entered our property by destroying the protector and the iron door and stealing an Apple laptop, an Iphone 12 max, an Iphone SS max and four Android phones.”
Another victim, Mr Righteous Arobokeri, said he was awakened at 12 am to gunfire on his property, adding that he could do nothing.
He said, “They overpowered vigilantes from Iwhrekan and Edjorphe. Later they moved from house to house to rob their victims. Nine people were shot, including two vigilantes and they are currently at the University of Benin University Hospital. With the information we have, one of the victims who suffered gunshot wounds is dead. Three of my tenants were shot in the eye, chest and abdomen respectively and were referred to UBTH.”
State police spokesman Bright Edafe could not be reached for comment on the incident at the time this report was submitted.
