The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Nasarawa says it has arrested 103 people for violating the state’s environmental health laws.

Abubakar Mohammed, the ministry’s chief prosecutor, made the disclosure on Saturday in an interview with journalists in Lafia.

He said the violators were arrested in the state’s 13 local government areas by the enforcement team for dealing with their private affairs during the remediation exercise.

According to him, the action violated the provisions of Section 9(2) of the State Environmental Health Act.

He noted that the violators were being prosecuted by several mobile courts in the state to deter others.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Yakubu Kwanta noted that the ministry has strengthened the inspectors’ capacity and deployed them in rural areas for door-to-door inspection to improve efficiency.

“We only allowed people to pass and move during the exercise with permission from the relevant authorities and people from essential services,” he explained.
