The People’s Democratic Party has warned that Nigeria cannot afford to hold the running mate of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Senator Kashim Shettima responsible for the country’s security because of his background.

This is what Anthony Ehilebo, head of PDP Digital, said when he appeared in Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, on Sunday.

Shettima, one of the panelists at the just-concluded National Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, had said he would oversee security, while his director, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, would oversee the economy if elected.

Ehilbo said, “How come you come to the NBA program and announce on live TV that you’re taking care of security and your director is running the economy?

“Section 130(2) of the 1999 Constitution specifies that this is the role of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. And if he decides to delegate power, it must be up to the armed forces. But here we have a VP candidate telling the world he wants to be in charge of our security.

“This is the same man who was in charge when the Chibok Girls issue happened. Shettima ignored the directive to move the students and the terrorists took advantage.

“It is also a fact that a suspected terrorist, Kabiru Sokoto, has been arrested by the DSS at the Governor’s Lodge. Today we couldn’t separate him from that. Unfortunately, Nigerians are more interested in his sneakers and what he wore to the NBA than in his statement.”

But when defending Shettima on the same program, a political economist and member of the APC Presidential Campaign Organization, Ayo Oyalowo, revealed that Shettima’s speech had been blown out of context.
