Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki secured the release from police custody on Tuesday, the community of Enogie of Ulegun, Sunday Eghosasere Omoregie and the Ohen (chief priest) of the community, Philip Uwuoroya, who were arrested on Wednesday over the dispute over land in the community.
Hundreds of Ulegun communities in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State had protested Monday at Government House, Benin City, claiming that some senior figures had demolished more than 80 homes in the community and later arrested the Enogie and the Ohen. The protesters then called on Governor Obaseki to help them secure the release of their community leaders.
Tribune Online met on Tuesday that Edo Police Commissioner Abutu Yaro had ordered the release of the Enogie and the Ohen, following the governor’s intervention.
During their protest at Government House on Monday, the community’s Queen Mother, Rose Omoregie, claimed that the community head had been summoned to a meeting last Wednesday and had not returned home since.
Ms. Omorie explained that the Enogie inherited the land in dispute between the Ulegun community and the Ikhiri community from his grandfather, and that the said land belongs to the Ulegun community.
She urged the immediate release of the Enogie and Ohen, saying that since 1974 the dispute over the land has been settled and resolved in favor of the Ulegun community, from Oba Akenzua’s palace to the Supreme Court.
