One of the things that kills self-esteem is comparing yourself to your peers. Almost everyone is guilty of this. Social media is a driving force behind this.

One minute you’re fine and then someone uploads a photo of you looking good and successful. Then you find yourself moody as you try to compare yourself to them.

The sooner you realize that what you see is what they want you to see, the better for you. No one will intentionally expose their unhappy and conflicted life on social media for you to see. Everyone wants people to see only the happy moments in their lives.

Funnily enough, you could be a source of motivation for the person you compare your life to. The person may admire the kind of life you have that they can’t enjoy themselves.

1. It drains your energy

Comparing yourself to others is a total waste of time and it gradually drains your energy. The time we use to weigh our lives side by side with others can be used for something productive. By doing this, we focus on other people’s lives as they progress, while staying in the same place.

2. It robs you of your joy

Comparison is a thief of joy. When you start to see that other people’s lives are better than yours, it gradually makes you sad. This makes you ungrateful for the things you have that they don’t. It makes life difficult and miserable for you. In no time you will be deeply depressed.

3. It Causes an Unhealthy Diet

Being in a low state is caused by comparing yourself to others. This will mess with your diet as it causes a low appetite. You suddenly lose interest in things and even obligations.

4. You can never be them

One of the reasons you should stop comparing yourself to others is that you can never be like them. It is better that you accept who you are and embrace your uniqueness. There can only be one you. No one can ever be like you, and you cannot physically change who you are.

You must be aware that you have a special talent, gift and ability that is only for you, and that it is different from someone else’s house.

5. Beware of Fake Lives

Most of the lives people show, physically or on social media, are usually far from reality. As mentioned before, your friends and family will only show you what they want you to see.

6. No one has a smooth and perfect lifestyle

You might think that everyone has a perfect life, judging by the posts they share. This is not true. No one has a perfect life here on Earth. Every person on earth has problems and challenges that he faces on a daily basis. The only difference is that some people are just good at dealing with their problems and emotions. Therefore, you should not use other people’s lives as a benchmark to measure or compare your progress and achievements.

Finally, you should also be aware that there will always be someone better than you and someone less or lower than you. Take it easy on yourself. Comparison will only cause you to speak negative words to yourself because you will continue to focus on what you can’t do instead of what you can do.
