Journalism Fellowship Programme 2023/2024 for Mid-Career Journalists at the University of Oxford
For the University of Oxford/Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowship Program, interested candidates are asked to apply. One of the most well-known programs in the world for working, mid-career journalists to take time off from their regular jobs to further their studies in journalism is the Reuters Institute’s Journalist Fellowship Programme. Most of our journalists are fully supported, and they also get a stipend to help with living and travel expenses.
The fellowship
You will deepen your understanding of journalism, the news industry, and your role within it through independent study, seminars, networking events, and discussions with your peers. You will work on a project in Oxford that will directly benefit you, your career, your newsroom, and the larger media sector while you are there, using what you learn through the fellowship. This program is intended for editors and working journalists who will rejoin the industry after a brief stay with us.
Programme Details
University of Oxford Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowship accept around 30 Journalist Fellows from around the world each year, each of whom bring fascinating insights and a wealth of experience to the institute. Here’s what is unique about our programme:
- You will be embedded in a cutting-edge institution that is shaping key media debates. The Reuters Institute produces factsheets and reports on the main challenges of the industry.
- You will be part of an institution with a global outlook. Our Journalist Fellows come from all over the world. They share ideas and experiences of working in different countries and different mediums.
- You will be part of one of the world’s greatest universities. Oxford offers unrivalled study facilities, leading research centres, extensive learning support and a global reputation.
- You will be just one hour from London by train, providing convenient access to some of the world’s leading news publishers like The Guardian, the Financial Times and the BBC.
Benefits
The majority of the program’s journalists receive full funding. Successful candidates receive payment for their fees as well as a stipend of £2,000 per month, which will cover their living expenses for lodging, food, and other necessities. We will also pay for your travel expenses to and from the UK as well as any visa fees.
Fellowship Length
Depending on their sponsorship, fellowships can last three or six months. They either start in January, April, or October. On the best days to arrive in Oxford, we’ll provide you advice. Our calendar aligns with the academic year’s term dates.
The fellowship months should not be used for professional work by fellows. For the duration of your fellowship, you are required to be present here during the academic year. You will be permitted to journey for short periods as long as you don’t miss any scheduled events.
Eligibility Requirements
- To be considered for one of our journalist fellowships, you must have a minimum of five years’ journalistic experience, or in rare cases demonstrate the equivalent level of expertise. The Journalist Fellowships are open to journalists from all over the world, including Europe, Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, North America, and Latin America.
- You will be able to understand and join in discussions in English
How to Apply
Applications for fellowships beginning in 2023/24 are open.
If you are a journalist with more than five years’ experience working in newsrooms, you qualify to apply for a Reuters Institute scholarship.
You will need to prepare:
- A one-page project statement. What is the idea that you plan to spend your time with us working on? What can you spend time reading about? Who will you talk to? Save this in PDF format.
- A 150-word summary of the question your project aims to look into.
- A one-page motivation statement. Why are you ready for a fellowship? Why do you want to do this project at the Reuters Institute? What will you do with your project once you return to the newsroom? Save this in PDF format.
- A two-page CV. Describe your career and education history. You may include links to your work here if you like. Save this in PDF format.
- Two letters of reference. Ask two people who know you and your work to write a letter recommending you for a fellowship. These letters should include the referee’s full name, job title, their relationship to you, and their contact details. Each reference should not be longer than one-page. Save these in PDF format.
The size limits for all PDF uploads is 25MB per document. You will then be able to submit these documents on our online application portal. No incomplete applications will be considered.
